I almost dismissed this guy, Misha Burlatsky, after having poked through the better part of his site, then I found these. His still life work has a vivid and graphic sense with soft light splashes falling across the items, often with a painterly effect. To balance this, in some work he blasts with hard light to show wood or peeling paint textures, like the black and white of the half fish on the cutting block. At first I wasn't impressed with his portraits and people work in general, then I noticed the second half of his site with his ambrotype work. This is the same process that Sally Mann uses, involving creating large negatives on sheets of glass that must then be quickly processed. The nature of the processing is what gives that scratchy look to the images. I found his portrait work in this section of the website was much more to my liking. Check it out!

Dramatic light

I really like the eerie feeling you get from this image. You aren't quiet sure if those people are alive. If you click on the link you can see how they created some of these shots, mostly using arries and being defused several times. Pretty cool.

Interesting commission work by Marc Gouby. I use stumbleupon.com often and it kicked this out at me the other day. The overall rather soft lighting in these scenes appears to be pretty typical for him. There's some fun conceptual stuff on his site if anyone cares to check it out.

Here's a photo I took after I finished my Crewdson project. For this photo I wanted just the car headlights to light it, so I took down all of the other lights and made my wonderful model stay there for a few more minutes so I could capture this shot.

Inspiration From Cine

I've been trying to take my photography in more of a cinematic direction. I love the idea of setting up a scene that tells a story. But in a way that appears to be a still frame from a movie. That way, there are just enough pieces to instill a sense of story and drama in the viewer's mind. But at the same time, leaves enough to the imagination. The viewer must conjure the story leading up to the events depicted in the photo and likewise for the conclusion that is to follow.

Crewdson's work is great. But it's almost too perfect, too pristine and too static at times. I want more action (not in the adventure sense). I want more... kinetic urgency, I guess you'd call it.

Two shots from the twilight assignment. I set up 3 strobes with this one; soft box with CTO inside, 11 in reflector with CTB and scrim, and 7 in reflector with a grid and CTB. There's a little shutter drag going on here, too; my exposures were a few seconds long. Outside's still a bit blue for me, so I'll just have better execution for the Crewdson final. Comments and suggestions are most welcome on this.

Humpty Dumpty fairytale project. I wanted to shoot this on a super sunny day so the hard light would make graphic shadows to add more drama to the scene. The pavement helped bounced some light back onto my model's face so he didn't look too much like a raccoon.

Here are so images from two different lighting test scenarios. The one of Kat was from our street portrait assignment. When we were hiding out in the shade we had some nice, soft light. Then the one of Randi is from the Roller Girls shoot, when we were using strobes to achieve a white background through side-lighting (which changed as the night went on).

This is an assignment I actually did for my Bootcamp class using a lot of layer masking and compositing multiple light sources on my subject. I think it was pretty successful and made me worry less about that Crewdson assignment. :-)

I put this together a couple weeks ago. It's my first attempt at HDR. I took five exposures, metering in between, and merged them in Photoshop. I really like this building.

Also, while I was shooting my documentary I did a little boy blue shoot with my brother and after both of those we were just playing around with the both of them and set up this shot - I think it's pretty funny and I'm SO surprised Baloo sat still in that chair!

My copy of the 2010:11 Anno annual came in the other day. Got a diptych published! And right next to Captain James T. Kirk, of all people (courtesy of Chris Buck ). :) But for some reason the Art Director split all the spreads in the magazine up over back-to-back pages, instead of adjacent pages. So the other half of my diptych is on the next page. But I'm excited, nonetheless.

My model, Blake, is angry 'cause the Priceline Negotiator got arrested with a hooker before he could get a good deal on a flight.

I came across this site as I was looking for inspiration. I think the pictures are cute, but the night time photos definitely don't look like there being lighted with natural light at all. In one of the pictures the couple obviously has a strobe blaring on them to much. And the scene isn't set up that well either, I can pretty much see the lighting equipment in the background. Great inspiration on what not to do! :)

Inspiring Lights

Here are some pictures that inspire me that I went through and I really love but haven't gotten the chance to share.

These three photos are from Joe's on Jupiter when I went with my family. The lights in the place were colored and there were so many lights it made for some interesting reflections.

This picture is from a show I went to at Vinyl. Attention System was playing and I found the show really compelling. Instead of having the lights straight on the leader singer and guitar players it was only on the drummer. I've never been to any show were they did the lighting on purpose like this. Somehow I feel like it made them connect more to the audience and gave them a great sense of mystery.

Here are some pictures I took after I did my twilight assignment that highly inspired me as well.

This is a quick candid I took on the set of a music video last weekend. Even thought there's a dominant main light source (behind me) and it makes everything red, the subject is far enough away from the background to be separated.

Played in the rain for the runner project. Very overcast/rainy day with super flat light. I've amped up these images a bit to put some pop back into them; mostly contrast manipulation, but also a hair of saturation. I like how the dark day let the wooded background scenery stay deep and rich while still keeping my model light enough.

I took these photos using a limited light source-- one is lit by a computer screen and the other by a sparkler. I love how a small amount of light can highlight an expression or a moment.

Stranger Danger

Last week we had to approach strangers and somehow persuade them to let us take their photo. So last Wednesday I camped out at Cool Beans at the Marietta Square all day, and waited for people who would let me take their photo. It was actually a lot easier than I thought it would be. No one that I asked said no, and I ended up having a lot of fun with it. The first person I approached was actually studying photography at the Portfolio Center, so it led to some good conversation. Here's some of the photos I got.

I took this picture of my pop-pop for my documentary class. I haven't edited it yet but the only light source I had is a little table lamp placed next to him. I like the warmth of the light that the lamp gave off and how it highlighted his profile and hands.

I took this picture a couple of weeks ago at Fernbank and I really love how the lights illuminate the staircase with a golden yellow glow. Also, I like hoe the composition makes your eyes follow the staircase from top to bottom.

Happy Monday Everyone,
Just a reminder that the in class editorial shooting assignment is this Wed at my studio, call time is 5:15pm, models arrive at 6pm. So far 9 ladies have signed up from the Atlanta Roller Girls to come out and model for us. Take a minute to look at their website www.atlantarollergirls.com and do a little research to see where they are coming from. A little knowledge goes a long way when building a rapport with your subjects. It's best to team up so go ahead and discuss that with your class mates before Wednesday so you can be prepared. You will take turns assisting and shooting and the models will rotate among the groups hourly. Both advanced lighting classes will be at this shoot so plan on sharing resources and working together. Students have gotten some great photos when we have done this in the past, even a student show winner so come ready to do your best.

It's amazing how the placement of lighting can give an object (or structure) a completely different look. This particular dwelling lends itself to all sorts of neat shapes created by the shadows on its surface.

Browsing this week, I came across this image of the Biblioteca Vasconcelos, a huge library in Mexico City. Although there are shelves upon shelves of books up in this joint, there appears to be a surprising amount of natural light bouncing all over the place. I want to go to there.

Polarizing filters

Hey everyone, if you have a polarizing filter for one of your lenses bring it with you today. Polarizers remove polarizing reflections from glass enabling the photographer to control reflections in windows and metal. They also help add contrast and saturation in addition to giving those deep blue skies. Great for landscapes and architecture.

I haven't been very diligent about keeping my camera with me at all times so this weekend I corrected. I shot these Sunday afternoon, it was overcast, I think I got some decent photographs. The dog is my 5 year old, her name, Poppie. She has the tendency of jumping in the view of my camera so there she is. I need a telephoto lense to have taken the geese taking off ...oh well.

This is a photo by Dimitris Theocharis I like this photo because of the color as well as the brightness and darkness of the photo. The length of the shadow tells me that the light source was smaller and up high, the way the sun would create a shadow early morning or later in the afternoon. Even though the shadow leads you out of the photo it also leads you back to the model.

Night Clouds

I personally love clouds and the sky (as you can tell this is the second time I am posting a picture that has them in it.) I took this a couple of weeks ago and I was trying to capture the awesomeness of the sky mixed with the menacing looking clouds coming in. With little natural light and the street lights that came on this is what happened.

Fun in the almost sun

Up frighteningly early and before the crack of dawn to make pictures. Yes, it was cold, and yes I had to bribe him with food. The Highlands turned out to not offer very good morning light as there are so many trees packed into such a small area, but this came out rather nice. Using a single strobe and soft box with just daylight in the background.

Locked in a Vegas Hotel Room with a Phantom Flex

Tom Guilmette makes television. & while working a gigi in Vegas he got to try out a brand new Phantom Flex high speed digital cinema camera, which shoots at 2,564 frames per second.

He put together an awesome video that shows each frame in slow motion and then at regular rate.
Since I haven't figured out (if that is or is not possible) how to add videos on here I just took screenshots of it.
It's AWESOME.
